Do you wonder how global warming will affect future generations and watch its progress on the news? Does a sense of guilt overwhelm you when you purchase a package of foam cups? You may be on the right track according to the philosophies expressed at No Impact Man.
No Impact Man is a blog website that outlines the experiences of a 43 year old husband, father and writer, Colin Beavan, living in New York City and seeking to make no net impact on the environment for a year. His formula involves minimizing the negative impact his family makes on the environment while having a positive impact by helping out to determine the overall net impact of their actions. Beavan seeks to make zero net impact on the environment over the course of a year and write a book and movie to tell how it is done.
Beavan is a liberal who was inspired by his own worry about the planet around him and decided the best place to start was at home. The Beavan family is eliminating waste, Colin drives a bicycles and they are volunteering to help clean the New York areas around them. Colin’s blog entries are humorous, enlightening, informative and inspiring. I was left with a feeling that there was actually something I can do right away to start helping the environment. Often we are left frustrated when our government leaders do too little to make a positive impact on the planet and fail to remember that success starts within ourselves.
Colin’s brilliant blog reminds us that change begins with ourselves. I was so intrigued with the zero net impact environment mission of the Beavan family that I subscribed to receive their updated posts. I may even start minimizing my environmental impact at home – after all, Colin shows us that every little bit makes a difference.
